Help Protect the Brook Trout in the Savage River Drainage
The Youghiogheny Chapter of T.U. has developed a web site for information about the Eastern Brook Trout venture and other studies ongoing in Trout Unlimited. There is a online petition for you to sign to show support for the Savage Brook Trout. Please take a minute and sign the petition, it will help combat the threats to the regulations that are now in place. The web site is: www.savageriverbrooktrout.org
Fishing Report for
June 2008
May was about a wash as I have seen in a long time. Hopefully the weather for the rest of the year will be better. The good news is that the lakes are all full, (if not too full ) and the water levels are dropping to more summer like levels.
The Savage still has water over the spillway, which is keeping the water levels up and also warming the water below the dam with water off the top of the lake. This should stop as soon as the water drops below the spillway early this month. Expect to see Yellow and Lime Green Sallies along with some Cahill's. Midges will dominate thru the summer, The flies will continue to get smaller as the season progresses.
The North Branch should start coming on this month. Both the upper and lower trout sections have plenty of cold water, and should fish well into the summer. Buggers, bead heads, March Browns and caddis all should work. Water temps in the Bass sections has now risen enough that the fish should be turned on, Crayfish and Hellgrammite's will be your best bet with popper action early in the morning may be good too.
The Youghiogheny below the power plant will have varying flows due to the generation of power on hot days. Caddis and Cahill's along with Dun and Cream Variants will be the hot flies.
The Army Corps of Engineers has released the tentative dates for whitewater releases for the Savage River. July 6th, August 3rd and August 31st. These releases will be dependant on water levels and cold water storage. For more info go to: http://www.nab-wc.usace.army.mil/northBranch.html
